Biography
Biography
Emperor Tiberius (42 BCE – 37 CE), born Tiberius Claudius Nero, was the second emperor of Rome, ruling from 14 to 37 CE. He was the stepson of Augustus, the empire’s first emperor, and belonged to the distinguished Claudian family. Initially reluctant to embrace public life, Tiberius was a skilled military commander and diplomat, leading successful campaigns in Germania and the Balkans. His relationship with Augustus was complex, marked by periods of tension, yet Augustus eventually adopted Tiberius, securing him as heir.
As emperor, Tiberius continued Augustus' policies, maintaining stability and consolidating the empire’s borders. However, as his reign progressed he became increasingly reclusive and distrustful, especially after the death of his son Drusus. Tiberius withdrew from public life, and governed remotely from the island of Capri. His later years were marred by allegations of cruelty and corruption, particularly involving his chief advisor, Sejanus, who wielded immense power and orchestrated purges of Tiberius' political enemies.
Tiberius died in 37 CE under suspicious circumstances, leaving behind a mixed legacy. He is often remembered as a capable but enigmatic ruler whose later years cast a shadow over his accomplishments.

The Original Masterpiece
This sculpture was created around the year 40. Well, at least some of it. The head dates to 40 CE, while the rest of it was produced in the 16th century by the Italian sculptor Guglielmo della Porta.
Despite being made during the end of Tiberius' life, or possibly a few years after his death, the emperor is portrayed as youthful. This could be a deliberate decision in order to make the elderly emperor appear less frail (as was often the case with busts of Augustus made late in his life), or it could mean that the bust was a copy of an earlier work which was made when Tiberius was a young adult.
Each part of the statue is made of marble, and it is currently housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, Italy alongside many other Greek and Roman antiques.
