Biography

Socrates (470-399 BCE) was a Greek philosopher born in Athens, widely regarded as one of the founding figures of Western philosophy. The son of a stonemason and a midwife, he served as a soldier before dedicating his life to philosophical inquiry. Unlike the sophists of his time, Socrates refused payment for his teachings, believing that the pursuit of wisdom and virtue was its own reward.

Socrates left no written works of his own, instead engaging citizens of Athens in open dialogue, probing their assumptions about justice, piety, courage, and the nature of the good life. This method of questioning — known as the Socratic method — became one of the most influential intellectual tools in history, and remains widely used in education and law to this day.

In 399 BCE, Socrates was brought to trial on charges of impiety and corrupting the youth of Athens. Found guilty, he was sentenced to death and calmly accepted his fate by drinking hemlock. His ideas, preserved through the writings of his student Plato, profoundly shaped the course of Western philosophy and thought.

The Original Masterpiece

This sculpture was created during the peak of the Roman Empire around the year 100 CE. The marble statue is believed to be an exact replica of an earlier Greek statue which was made from Bronze. The original bust's creation is attributed to Lysippos, one of the three great sculptors of Greece's Classical Period.

The original was sculpted around the year 318 BCE, within a century Socrates' death. It is believed that the sculpture was commissioned by Athens because they regretted condemning the philosopher to death. Today the statue is housed in the Louvre in Paris, where it is on display for the public to observe.
