Biography
Biography
Lucius Annaeus Seneca, commonly known as Seneca the Younger, or simply Seneca, was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist, and advisor to Emperor Nero. Born in Córdoba, Spain into a wealthy family, Seneca was brought to Rome as a child, where he was educated in rhetoric and philosophy.
Seneca's career in politics was marked by notable achievements and controversies. He held various positions and became one of the leading intellectual figures of his time. Seneca was exiled to the island of Corsica by Emperor Claudius around 41 CE, accused of adultery with Julia Livilla, the emperor's niece. He was recalled eight years later to tutor the young Nero, who later became emperor.
As Nero's advisor, Seneca wielded significant influence during the early years of Nero's reign, promoting a policy of clemency and governance. However, his position became increasingly precarious as Nero's rule grew more tyrannical. In 65 CE, Seneca was implicated in the Pisonian conspiracy to assassinate Nero, leading to his forced suicide.
Seneca's philosophical works, deeply rooted in Stoicism, address themes such as the nature of the good life, the importance of reason, and the development of personal virtue. His teachings on Stoicism, particularly his emphasis on inner strength and resilience, continue to be relevant and inspirational to this day.

The Original Masterpiece
This statue captures Seneca at the moment of his forced suicide, a poignant scene drawn from his historical and philosophical legacy. The statue is a dramatic representation, showing Seneca with a pensive and stoic expression, reflecting his adherence to Stoic principles even in the face of death. After being ordered to kill himself by Emperor Nero, Seneca cut his veins, but due to health issues and his old age, his blood flow was insufficient to end his life swiftly. Despite this, Seneca remained stoic and composed until he finally bled out.
The sculptor responsible for the statue is unknown, however it is known that it was created in France. The statue is currently housed in Moscow's Imperial Academy of Arts along with numerous other busts of historical figures.
