Biography

Emperor Nero (37–68 CE), born Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, ruled as the fifth Roman emperor from 54 to 68 CE. He was the last emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, coming to power as a young teenager after being adopted by his great-uncle and stepfather, Emperor Claudius. Early in his reign, Nero was guided by experienced advisors, including the philosopher Seneca, and his rule initially brought a period of relative stability and prosperity.

As Nero gained independence, however, his reign took a darker turn. Known for his extravagant lifestyle and passion for the arts, Nero controversially performed as an actor, singer, and charioteer, behaviors considered undignified for a Roman emperor. His rule became increasingly tyrannical and infamous for episodes of cruelty, including accusations of orchestrating the deaths of his mother, Agrippina the Younger, and his wife, Octavia.

Nero ruthlessly persecuted Christians, and discontent grew as his reign progressed, particularly among the aristocracy and military. A revolt led by the governor Galba in 68 CE forced Nero to flee Rome, and, facing certain execution, he took his own life. Nero’s death ended the Julio-Claudian dynasty and plunged Rome into a chaotic year known as the Year of the Four Emperors. Remembered as both a tyrant and a patron of the arts, Nero’s legacy remains among the most controversial in Roman history.

The Original Masterpiece

This bust was created by the Italian sculptor Francesco "Cabianca" Penso in the early 1700s.

Nero is depicted in official Roman attire, including a crown. Like much of Penso's work, this bust is made to be life-sized. Nero's expression is both confident and irritated, a combo of emotions fitting for the young emperor.

The statue's material is limestone, and it is currently on display in the Summer Garden park in St. Petersburg, Russia, alongside many other busts of historical figures.
