Biography

Marcus Aurelius (121–180 CE) was a Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher, best known for his rule during the Pax Romana and his philosophical work Meditations. Born in Rome, he came from a wealthy and politically connected family. He was adopted by Emperor Antoninus Pius, becoming his designated successor. In 161 CE, Marcus Aurelius became emperor, sharing power initially with his adoptive brother Lucius Verus until Verus’s death in 169 CE.

As emperor, Marcus Aurelius dealt with numerous challenges, including invasions by Germanic tribes and internal unrest. Despite these difficulties, his reign is remembered as a period of relative peace and stability. He was also deeply devoted to Stoic philosophy, which emphasized reason, self-control, and virtue.

Unlike many Roman emperors, Marcus Aurelius is remembered for his humility and moral integrity. He ruled with a sense of duty and sought to embody the Stoic ideal of the philosopher-king. His Meditations remains one of the most influential works of philosophy, and his legacy as one of Rome’s "Five Good Emperors" endures.

The Original Masterpiece

This bust of Marcus Aurelius dates between the years 170 and 180 CE, meaning it was produced during the final decade of the emperor's life.

Depicted with his signature curly hair and beard, Marcus wears a cuirass, or breastplate, typical of military officer. This is unsurprising as much of the emperor's time during this period was spent away from his capital on campaign against Rome's enemies. His expression is contemplative and slightly solemn, reflecting his reputation as a Stoic philosopher.

The statue's material is docimium marble, likely of Turkish origin. It is currently housed in Musee Saint Raymond in France where it may be viewed by the public.
