Biography
Biography
Hannibal Barca (247–183 BCE) was a Carthaginian general and is widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders in history. Born in Carthage, in modern-day Tunisia, he was the son of the celebrated general Hamilcar Barca. From a young age, Hannibal was immersed in military life, accompanying his father on campaigns and developing a deep understanding of warfare and strategy.
Hannibal is best known for his audacious campaign against Rome during the Second Punic War. In 218 BCE, he led his army — including war elephants — on an extraordinary march across the Iberian Peninsula, through southern Gaul, and over the Alps into northern Italy, a feat considered one of the boldest military maneuvers in history. He went on to inflict several devastating defeats on Rome, most notably at the Battle of Cannae in 216 BCE.
Despite his remarkable victories, Hannibal was ultimately unable to defeat Rome decisively. He was recalled to Carthage, where he was defeated by the Roman general Scipio Africanus at the Battle of Zama in 202 BCE. He died in exile in 183 BCE, leaving behind a legacy as one of antiquity's most brilliant military minds.

The Original Masterpiece
This sculpture was discovered in 1667 in the vicinity of ancient Capua, a region where Hannibal spent considerable time following his victory at Cannae. Some debate exists as to who it is depicting, but it is generally regarded as "the only likeness [of Hannibal] with a serious claim to authenticity."
This bust portrays Hannibal with a commanding, battle-hardened presence, reflecting the Carthaginian general’s legendary reputation. He is shown with a stern expression, short curled hair, and a trimmed beard, wearing a decorated military cloak and headpiece. His upward gaze conveys resolve, ambition, and strategic confidence.
The sculpture is made from marble, and it is currently housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, Italy alongside many other Greek and Roman antiques.
