Biography
Biography
Constantine the Great (c. 272 – 337 AD) was a Roman Emperor who is best known for being the first Christian emperor and for his significant role in the transition of the Roman Empire from paganism to Christianity. Born in what is now Serbia, he was the son of Constantius Chlorus, a Roman army officer and member of the Tetrarchy.
Constantine rose to power after a series of civil wars, ultimately becoming the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. He enacted numerous reforms, including the reorganization of the empire's structure and the establishment of a new capital, Constantinople, which became a center of trade and culture.
In 313 AD, he issued the Edict of Milan, granting religious tolerance to Christians and ending their persecution. Constantine was also known for his military successes and for convening the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, which aimed to address various theological disputes within Christianity.
He died in 337 AD shortly after being baptized, leaving a lasting legacy as a pivotal figure in the history of Christianity and the Roman Empire.

The Original Masterpiece
This statue, known as the Colossus of Constantine, was commissioned by Constantine himself around the year 315. This head was just one part of a 40 foot tall assembly which depicted the emperor seated on a throne.
Rather than aiming for a purely life-like depiction, this sculpture accentuates some of Constantine's features, notably his eyes and chin. The statue was originally located in the west apse of the Basilica of Maxentius. The style, size, and location of the sculpture resulted in giving it what has been described as an "unapproachable grandeur". Parts of the original, such as the bronze torso, have been lost, but fortunately the head, as well as the feet and several other pieces, survive to us today.
The bust is currently housed in the Capitoline Museums in Rome, where it may be viewed by the public.
