Biography

Emperor Claudius (10 BCE – 54 CE) was the fourth Roman emperor, ruling from 41 to 54 CE. Born Tiberius Claudius Drusus Nero Germanicus, he was the nephew of Emperor Tiberius and the great-nephew of Emperor Augustus.

Upon the assassination of Emperor Caligula in 41 CE, Claudius was declared emperor by the Praetorian Guard, marking an unlikely rise to power. His reign was characterized by ambitious public works, including the construction of aqueducts, roads, and the expansion of the port at Ostia, which was crucial for grain imports. He also undertook a successful military campaign in Britain, adding it to the Roman Empire in 43 CE—a significant achievement that brought him prestige and resources.

Claudius’ personal life was complex and marred by intrigue, particularly with his fourth wife, Agrippina the Younger, who was suspected of poisoning him to secure the throne for her son, Nero. Claudius died in 54 CE under suspicious circumstances, and his death marked the end of his transformative rule, paving the way for the infamous reign of Nero. Claudius is remembered as a ruler who overcame personal challenges to strengthen and expand the Roman Empire.

The Original Masterpiece

This sculpture was created during Claudius' reign (41-54 CE). Like many imperial busts of the time, this piece of artwork was commissioned to project the emperor’s image as both authoritative and cultured. Claudius is depicted in a calm and dignified manner, wearing full imperial regalia. The artist's name is unknown, though it was likely crafted in an imperial workshop, perhaps by a team of several sculptors. The material of the sculpture is marble.

Today the statue is housed on the ground floor of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli in Italy, where it is on display for the public to observe.
