Biography
Biography
Marcus Tullius Cicero was a Roman statesman, orator, philosopher, and writer, widely regarded as one of the greatest speakers in history. Born in Arpinum, he was from a wealthy equestrian family but was not of noble birth. He pursued a career in law and quickly gained recognition for his eloquence and skill in the courts. His rise in Roman politics was marked by his advocacy for the Republic, his opposition to corruption, and his ability to navigate the complex power struggles of the late Republic.
Cicero reached the height of his political career in 63 BC when he was elected consul. During his consulship, he famously exposed and suppressed the Catiline Conspiracy, a plot to overthrow the government. His speeches against Catiline, known as the Catilinarian Orations, remain some of the most famous examples of Roman rhetoric.
Cicero’s writings on rhetoric, philosophy, and politics, including De Oratore, De Re Publica, and De Officiis, have had a lasting influence on Western thought. Despite his eloquence and political skill, he was ultimately caught in the power struggles of his time. After opposing Mark Antony following Julius Caesar’s assassination, he was declared an enemy of the state and executed in 43 BC. His legacy endures as a champion of republican ideals and the rule of law.

The Original Masterpiece
This sculpture was created in the early 19th century in Italy by famed sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. It is a replica of a Roman original.
Like most busts of Cicero, this depiction shows him as commanding and solemn. His facial expression is serious and contemplative, reflecting his reputation as a philosopher and statesman. The finely detailed carving of his furrowed brow and deep-set eyes conveys intelligence and determination, traits that defined his role in Roman politics and oratory.
The statue's material is marble, and it is currently housed in the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark alongside many other works by Thorvaldsen.
The bust is a perfect reproduction of the original. I am very pleased with my order.
