Biography
Biography
Caligula (12 AD – 41 AD), born Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus, was the third Roman Emperor, reigning from 37 AD until his assassination in 41 AD. He was a member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty and a direct descendant of Augustus, Rome's first emperor.
Caligula's early reign was initially well-received. After succeeding his adoptive grandfather Tiberius, he restored political exiles, gave generous public spectacles, and was seen as a breath of fresh air after the grim rule of Tiberius. However, after a severe illness in late 37 AD, Caligula's behavior became increasingly erratic, and he gained a reputation for cruelty, extravagance, and eccentricity.
There are numerous accounts of Caligula engaging in bizarre and tyrannical acts, such as appointing his horse as a priest.
In 41 AD, after just four years in power, Caligula was assassinated in a conspiracy led by officers of the Praetorian Guard. His death marked the end of his tumultuous reign, and he was succeeded by his uncle Claudius. While modern historians question the accuracy of some of the more extreme accounts of Caligula's actions, he is remembered as one of Rome's most infamous emperors.

The Original Masterpiece
This bust of the third ruler of the Julio-Claudian dynasty is in an idealized style. The emperor is depicted in a youthful, yet authoritative manner.
Upon Caligula's head is a "corona civica", or civic crown. This crown was among Rome's highest military honors, granted to those who saved another Roman in combat. He did not see combat or lead armies to battle as emperor, but he may have earned the civic crown in his youth while fighting beneath his father in Germania. He also is depicted wearing a cuirass, which is a breastplate typical of military officers.
The sculpure's material is marble. The exact date of production is unknown, though it was likely during his reign between the years of 37 and 41. It currently is housed in Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, Denmark.
