Biography
Biography
Augustus, born Gaius Octavius Thurinus on September 23, 63 BCE, was the founder of the Roman Empire and its first Emperor, ruling from 27 BCE until his death in 14 CE. He was the great-nephew and adopted heir of Julius Caesar. After Caesar's assassination in 44 BCE, Augustus formed the Second Triumvirate with Mark Antony and Lepidus to defeat Caesar's assassins.
Following their victory, the Triumvirate eventually dissolved due to internal conflicts. Augustus defeated Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE, securing his position as the sole ruler of Rome. He was granted the title "Augustus" by the Senate in 27 BCE, marking the beginning of the Roman Empire.
Augustus initiated a period of relative peace known as the Pax Romana, which lasted for over two centuries. He reformed the Roman system of taxation, developed networks of roads, established a standing army and the Praetorian Guard, and rebuilt much of the city of Rome. His reign laid the foundations for a stable and prosperous empire.

The Original Masterpiece
Historians disagree on whether or not Augustus has been depicted in more sculptures than any other human. What is not debated is the fact that an absolutely massive volume of busts of the first Roman Emperor were created during his lifetime. Augustus had sculptures like this one sent to all corners of his empire, solidifying his power and promoting stability and unity.
This art piece is a plaster cast of a marble original. It is similar in appearance to many of the other busts of Augustus which have been found throughout the former Roman Empire.
The statue is currently housed in Switzerland's Skulpturhalle Basel along with several other busts of Roam Emperors, including multiple of Augustus.
